Wastewater Surveillance for Infectious Disease Monitoring

Wastewater monitoring is one of the increasingly promising methods of tracking the presence of infectious diseases in populations. Using this method, it is possible to detect genetic material or any other markers of pathogens and acquire additional knowledge to help clinicians and public health specialists understand what is happening in communities. This session is dedicated to the science behind wastewater-based monitoring of infectious diseases.

This session will cover such issues as sampling methods, concentration of pathogens, molecular detection, genome analysis, and interpretation of the results obtained from wastewater monitoring. Researchers can discuss studies about various infectious agents including respiratory viruses, enteric pathogens, antibiotic resistance markers, and other microorganisms. In addition, the relationships between wastewater signals and the number of clinical cases will be discussed, as well as the difficulties in working with environmental samples and interpreting data.

Environmental scientists, microbiologists, epidemiologists, public health officials, and laboratory researchers are invited to share their innovative work on wastewater monitoring of infectious diseases. The studies may concern early warning systems, detection of outbreaks, development of regional surveillance networks, and the integration of environmental data into clinical and epidemiological data.
