Syphilis, Congenital Syphilis, and the Global STI Resurgence

The increase in the incidence of syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases has been identified as an emerging issue in public health in various parts of the world. Factors such as high number of cases, inadequate screening, delayed diagnosis and limited treatment access continue to lead to its continued prevalence. Congenital syphilis, especially, is a major concern, as it can cause a number of serious problems for the unborn baby and new-born due to lack of adequate treatment.

This discussion will address issues relating to trends in the current syphilis cases and others, the ways in which transmission occurs, risk factors and challenges of reaching out to disadvantaged populations. It will focus on issues of testing for syphilis, screening of syphilis, notification of partners, and treatments that are evidence based. Attention will be paid specifically to antenatal screening, maternal treatment and follow up care.

The discussion will address issues on how STIs can be prevented or controlled through testing, access to services of sexual health care, digital health services and surveillance. This will include discussions about the need to reduce stigma, improve access to healthcare, and provide evidence based education.
