Long COVID and Post-Acute Infection Syndromes

Conditions such as Long COVID and post-acute infection syndromes are currently a significant focus of clinical research. People may experience persistent problems even after an infection has been overcome and may suffer from impaired physical function, cognition, and quality of life. The variety of signs and the lack of definitive tests make the diagnosis and treatment challenging for medical professionals and scientists.

During this session, recent insights related to post-acute infection syndromes will be reviewed. Persistent immune response, inflammation, potential pathogen persistence, autonomic dysfunction, and metabolic disturbances will be among those mechanisms explored. Risks factors, disease presentation, development, progression, and signs which can be used for the identification of people who have such syndromes will be considered. Comparison with syndromes caused by infections with different pathogens will also be made.

Advances in the area of diagnostics, rehabilitation, and patient care for people with post-acute infection syndromes will be reviewed. The importance of ongoing research into therapies and the necessity of long-term studies will be highlighted.
