Long-Acting HIV Prevention and Treatment

Options for long-acting prevention and treatment for HIV are increasing the chances of better adherence, decreased treatment burden, and continuity of care. Daily medications may be difficult for some individuals due to access problems, stigma, personal factors, or inability to take them consistently. Long-acting options may serve as another method to reduce dosing frequency and provide more convenience to patients receiving prevention or treatment for HIV.

This session will discuss advancements in long-acting antiretroviral therapy and PrEP, including injectables and novel sustained release preparations. Discussion participants will consider clinical effectiveness, safety, eligibility criteria, dosing schedules, concerns about resistance and the need for proper testing and follow-up. Participants will also discuss how the discussed methods can help meet various prevention and treatment needs of different population groups.

The session will further focus on implementing the discussed long-acting HIV prevention and treatment methods in various settings. Such issues as affordability, regulatory access, distribution channels, counseling, and incorporation into HIV services will be considered. Participants will share their thoughts about ways to ensure equitable access to care.
