Infection Risks Associated with Medical Devices and Implants

Although medical devices and implants are vital for today's healthcare, they may become substrates for microorganism adhesion and subsequent infection formation. Medical device infections may lead to additional treatments, complications, prolonged hospitalisation, and other negative consequences. The topic of this session is biological mechanisms, clinical risk factors, diagnostic measures, and prevention strategies concerning infections due to the use of medical devices and implants.

This topic covers such issues as catheter infections, implant biofilm infections, infections of artificial joints, infections due to surgical material use, and complications of using any other invasive devices. Antimicrobial coatings of surfaces, infection-resistant biomaterials, development of new device designs, methods of diagnosis of such infections, as well as early detection measures may be subjects for research in this area.

This session encourages submissions of contributions from biomedical engineers, microbiologists, infectious diseases specialists, surgeons, professionals of infection prevention, and biomaterials specialists. Laboratory investigations, clinical studies, biomaterials innovations, and assessment of medical device infection prevention strategies are some examples of possible submission topics.
